Groovy Lab in a Box is full of everything a child needs to learn about and do hands on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) experiments. Their monthly box activates thinking, questioning, inquiring, and original creation as they guide children through “SCIENTIFIC INQUIRY & the ENGINEERING DESIGN PROCESS.” It’s probably something a little bit different from other experiments experienced in the past. Each month features all the supplies needed to complete activities, experiments, and design challenges outlined in their custom, subject specific lab notebook along with FUN web based learning in “Beyond...in a Box” found on their website. If children are “engineering” their very own original designs, then they are doing the “E” in STEM. It’s the application of their prior knowledge in science, mathematics, and utilization of technology that they apply in order to create!
All children are natural “STEMists!” STEM•ist /stĕmʹĭst/ n. expert in applying science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Explorer, creator, inventor…STEMist!
For this review I was provided with "Here Comes The Sun" kit. This is our first Groovy Lab in a Box and we have never experienced STEM activities or Engineering Design Challenges. I like that the lab notebook guided us with step by step directions so that we could understand the concepts and uses of renewable energy sources. My daughter and fiance worked together on all of the activities and had a blast doing it! Instead of getting frustrated when something didn't work she would brainstorm her ideas and try again. This is such a GREAT Box, especially to keep her busy during summer vacation! She's very into our solar system and learning all about it, so this “Beyond...in a Box” was perfect for HER! I've never seen her so focused to try and figure something out.
I highly recommend giving Groovy Lab in a Box a try, even if it's just once (which I'm sure it won't be). My daughter is already waiting for her next shipment! And keep in mind... All children are natural “STEMists!”
